Mole Valley Ramblers

- friendly walking in the heart of Surrey

On Monday 24th February, 12 lucky MVR members were treated to an interesting, informative and extremely entertaining talk from Brendan McWilliams of Surrey First Aid Training.

Many of us had encountered Brendan before because he was our tutor about three years ago when we first started providing this specific type of training for our group. It was a lively and interactive session tackling serious topics but in an amusing way. It made for a stimulating and memorable day.

We covered a wide range of potential emergencies that might be encountered during a walk including:-

Airway opening and safe airway position
Management of an unconscious casualty
Resuscitation CPR – remote protocols
Defibrillator in remote environments
Choking management
Serious bleeding
Major trauma and internal bleeding
Management of fractures and sprains
Asthma – remote protocols
Allergies, anaphylactic shock and administration of adrenaline.
Burns
Stroke
Epilepsy
Diabetes and low blood sugar.
Lyme's disease.

We completed the day with not just an improved knowledge of these topics but, more importantly, the skills and confidence to deal with such an emergency should it ever arise.

You can read more about how to be safe while walking here.
