Mole Valley Ramblers

- friendly walking in the heart of Surrey

Andy H and Jayne L were happy to take up an invitation, on behalf Mole Valley Ramblers, to attend the launch of the Surrey Hills National Landscape Summer Travel Campaign on Tuesday 12th July.

It provided an opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to working with other groups concerned with looking after, and improving access to, our beautiful local countryside; also, to discover just how many groups there are with essentially similar objectives but with a different focus to ours.

The objective of this campaign is to promote the use of public transport and "active transport" (walking, riding or cycling) to access the Surrey Hills.  There are obvious environmental reasons for asking people to leave their cars at home but, of course, there are those whose only means of visiting the countryside would be by bus or train.  The local bus companies and rail operators were involved in putting the campaign together, as were the Surrey CC and Mole Valley DC.

It was representatives of the two councils who officially unveiled the very attractive new poster that will be displayed at railway stations advertising the newly refreshed Mole Gap Trail, intended as the first of several promoted walks within the landscape.  If you think you know the Mole Gap Trail already, you might be surprised at what you could still learn from the new promotional leaflet and the online information available en route via QR codes and interactive maps.

More information can be found at Surrey Hills National Landscape launches Summer Travel Campaign - it is well worth taking a look!

In response to this campaign walkers might want to consider using public transport more often for getting to and from our walks.  Similarly, leaders could usefully think about choosing walks that are accessible by public transport.  Many of us have bus passes so it would be an opportunity to save money.  A very useful resource for bus times is here - you can search for your particular location.  This site gives the times and locations for all the intermediate stops, unlike the Surrey CC published timetables.
