Mole Valley Ramblers

friendly walking in the heart of Surrey

Cliff's Magnificent Milestone

On 20 July we had a special celebratory walk from Newlands Corner entitled Venerating Veterans. Former walk leaders had been invited by our Chairman, Joan Young, to join this walk, led by Fiona in honour of our veteran walk leaders.

The route followed some of the lesser known paths to the north of the information centre and included a visit to some magnificent veteran yew trees.

27 of our members came together for this occasion. It was good to see old friends having the chance to re-connect and share happy memories of previous walks together. Afterwards we had tea at the cafe nearby, where Joan spoke on the club's behalf to acknowledge our gratitude to Cliff Weight for his wonderful achievement of having led 300 walks for MVR. Although no-one else has come anywhere near that number, several of our other top 20 leaders (who have each led more than 100 walks) were also present.

Cliff has done much for the club over the years, acting as Treasurer, Walk Reports Coordinator, holding the group's archives and, along with his wife Shirley, being an active participant for almost 35 years. Although Cliff has elected to retire from leading, we hope he will continue to join us for walks and social occasions for many years to come. Meanwhile, we wish him all the best and hope he feasts well on the magnificent cakes and other fare he can enjoy at home, expertly prepared by Shirley.

The challenge, which takes walkers up Holmbury Hill, Leith Hill and Box Hill will offer 7, 13 or 26 mile options. See here for the event poster. We should all be so fit by then after our Spring Walks Festival, so maybe some might be up for a 13 mile, or even 26 mile, challenge! If anyone is interested please let Fiona know by 16 April.
